What you need to do
1. Read our questions, guidance and logframe documentation
Choose one programme that best fits your project
We will only consider one application for a project at a time, so please only apply to the programme that fits most closely with your project and the amount of funding you require to deliver it. If you are unsure which programme to apply to, please contact us.
Only one award at a time - Failure rates – Expectation management
We only have a certain amount of funding to award and receive a lot of applications to our grant programmes, so ask that you do not place multiple applications, just one at a time.
We have to make some tough decisions around which projects we can fund. In our first three years of awarding grants to charities and organisations the application success rate was around 1 in 5.

Alongside the application form you will need to supply us with:
- Your organisation’s governing documents. In most cases this will constitute a Memorandum and Articles of association.
- Your organisation’s last three years audited/independently examined accounts.
- Your organisation’s latest management accounts.
- An Excel document detailing the budget for the funding you are applying for.
Copies of the organisation’s policies for Safeguarding and Equal Opportunities. In addition the Foundation use Logframes to help us understand the impact our work is having for disabled people.
A logical framework (logframe) is a tool to help people who design projects think logically about:
- What their project is trying to achieve (outcome)
- What things the project needs to do to make that happen (outputs)
- What has to be done to produce these (activities)
To help you with your application we’ve created some guidance around completing a logframe which can be found here.
Every funding round has some indicators which we ask all grant recipients to report against. You are welcome to use other indicators from this list in your logframe, or to generate your own using the same format.

What we will do

2. Checks we carry out on your application
Why we carry out due diligence
To successfully make a difference, we need to support organisations with the best chance of delivering meaningful impact for disabled people. The Motability Foundation will not award a grant if we identify a serious risk that charitable funds may be mismanaged or used ineffectively. To this end our team carry out a number of checks on applications we receive.
What topic areas we cover
The checks carried out under the Due Diligence Framework cover six key areas: Governance, Finances, Management, Reputation, Applicant Capability and Proposal Feasibility.
- We aim to speak to all organisations that submit applications to us, to understand as much as possible about them, and how they support disabled people.
- If anything is identified as part of our checks that gives us cause for concern, we may contact you to try and resolve them. If however, our decision to not accept your application is based on the findings of these checks, then we aim to outline our concerns when you are informed of our decision.
3. Decide on your application
- The grant making panel meets with X frequency.
- Meeting dates (rough) – These are on a per-funding round basis.
All decisions are made by a panel of staff at the Motability Foundation with both knowledge of grantmaking, and either direct or indirect experience around the transport challenges faced by disabled people.
For applications of less than £1mn, the panel will always include members of the Foundation’s executive team. For applications of £1mn or more, the panel will be made up of a subset of the Foundation’s governors with experience in grantmaking.
